German craftsmanship – where tradition meets innovation!

The German skilled crafts sector is a vital part of the country’s economy, offering a wide range of professions and career opportunities that require both hands-on craftsmanship and technical expertise. This diversity makes the skilled crafts sector an exciting and dynamic field to work in.

Most skilled crafts businesses in Germany are small and medium-sized companies, many of which are family-run. Teamwork plays a crucial role, as complex projects—whether on construction sites or at customers’ premises— can only be completed successfully when coordinated in a professional and joint manner. Moreover, German craftsmanship is known for its innovative strength, particularly in the areas of sustainable construction, renewable energies, and environmentally friendly technologies. The skilled crafts sector is forward-thinking and adaptable, actively contributing to Germany’s climate goals by installing eco-friendly heating systems and energy-efficient building technologies.

The project therefore also focuses on skilled crafts professions that contribute to Germany’s energy transition and climate protection efforts.

The following professions are included in the project:

  • Electronics technician
  • Bricklayers
  • Concrete and reinforced concrete workers
  • Carpenters
  • Roofers
  • Road builders
  • Metalworkers
  • Plant mechanics for sanitary, heating and air conditioning technology
  • Motor vehicle mechatronics technician
  • Mechatronics technician for refrigeration technology

The project determines which of these professions will be prioritized in a given recruitment cycle. This means that not all professions will be open for applications at all times.

Two possible immigration pathways to Germany

The pilot project offers two pathways for skilled workers to come to Germany. One follows already well-established regulations while the other is based on a new regulation of the German Skilled Immigration Act.

  • Path 1:
    Recognition of your professional qualification

Following this path, you travel to Germany on a special visa for the recognition of your foreign professional qualification. You start working immediately while simultaneously completing an Adaptation Qualification Programme. This programme helps to bridge gaps between the training you completed in Colombia or Uzbekistan and the German reference occupation by providing additional knowledge and skills. Once you successfully complete the programme, your professional qualification is fully recognized in Germany and you can continue working permanently as a skilled worker in Germany.

    Requirements:

    • A vocational qualification of at least two years, officially recognized in your home country
    • Several years of professional experience in one of the listed skilled crafts professions
    • Your foreign qualification must be related to a German skilled crafts occupation
  • Path 2:
Direct entry as a qualified worker with professional experience

If you have extensive professional experience, you may be able to enter Germany as a qualified worker—even if your formal qualification does not exactly match the job requirements in Germany.

    Requirements:

    • A vocational qualification of at least two years, officially recognized in your home country
    • Several years of relevant professional experience in one of the listed skilled crafts professions
    • Your qualification does not have to correspond with the German reference occupation

We will advise you and your employee of you concerning the recognition of your professional qualification and Additionally, applicants for path 2 must complete a work trial in their home country. This work trial is part of the selection process, and the results determine entry to the project.

Take your chance and build your professional future in Germany!

Project support structures

Learning a new language, relocating to a new country, and adjusting to a different culture can pose significant challenges. For this reason, we have developed a wide range of support structures to help you navigate the process smoothly.

Support by project partners in Germany

German Federal Employment Agency and International Placement Services

The German Federal Employment Agency (BA) is the federal authority responsible for labour market policy services. Different areas of the BA are involved in the project in order to reach concrete agreements with the partner countries Uzbekistan and Colombia (International Relations department within the head office), to ensure the recruitment and support of participants (regional teams of the International Placement Services) and to carry out the work permit procedures (responsible labour market admission teams).

The skilled crafts organisation

chambers of skilled crafts represent the skilled crafts sector.  A total of nine skilled craft organisations are involved in the project. Skilled workers immigration advisors at these nine skilled crafts organisations will support you preparing your immigration to Germany and will assist you once you have arrived. The map shows the locations of the participating skilled crafts organisations in Germany.

The skilled crafts business

Your future employer supports you in adjusting to your new work and life environment. Dring the language course in your home country, regular digital exchange formats between you and your employer can be arranged. This allows you to get to know each other and stay informed about the latest developments in the company. A major challenge for international skilled workers is finding accommodation in Germany. Your employer and the skilled crafts organization will assist you: They are familiar with the local housing market. If you need to complete an adaptation qualification programme, your company will support you in carrying out the necessary in-company measures and will grant you paid leave for external training measures. Any costs incurred for required measures that cannot take place within the company will be covered by the project.

sequa gGmbH

Once you are accepted into the project, you will sign a participation agreement with sequa. Sequa is a globally active development organization that implements projects and programs in international cooperation in close collaboration with stakeholders from the German private sector. In the project FIT for German Climate Businesses, sequa is primarily responsible for the project administration as well as project management.
